It's Official

I turned in Tori's forms and mailed the boys forms on Wednesday. We have officially declared that they will receive competent private instruction. Oh Lord help us! Ü

We went to the Middle School to turn in Tori's physical and have her sign the Code of Conduct form.

Here we go -- our first ever dual enrollee.

She had a cross country meeting Thursday- then practice begins on Monday. These happen "after school." School lets out at 3:09. :/ My word... I wonder if they are always so exact with their times. Just in case -- we went to Wal-Mart and bought her a watch. LOL I told her to set her watch by the school clock. I think I remember doing that when I was in public school. Plus it will come in handy when she is running -- it has a stop watch on it... only it's not ugly and nerdy like stop watches used to be back in the day. Ü We set the alarm for 6:00 a.m. No excuses for sleeping in now.

Milo's Schedule

Last but not least -- Milo's schedule. He gets to watch TV for 30 minutes a day. He is SO excited. I don't make schedules for the babies, ones who aren't in school. I'm done. Whew...

Mansel's Schedule

Mansel's schedule looks similar to Tori's, but he will have more free time if he doesn't dawdle. his classes are near as time consuming as hers are. His math lesson shouldn't take him 1 hour, but I've scheduled it for 1 hour. If he completes all his work in the alloted time, he shouldn't have home work when we go to town. So - should and does... that's the difference.

Tori's Schedule

(Remember - click to enlarge)

Oh wow... Tori is growing up. She has less and less free time each year. Probably more free time then a government school kid, but less free time then Mansel. She will probably be glad for Fridays this year. More and more of her classes are becoming independent study type classes.
I'm glad for My Father's World curriculum. She will still do our family classes with us; Bible, History, Science, Vocabulary, book basket, Art, Music, and Nature Walk. I just want to HUG her to me for as long as I can.

I spoke with our Pastor this week about the youth program at church. I'm looking forward to her starting her new Sunday School class, and Sunday Evening class with the young adults. (Teen agers, if you must). She is going to be joining us on Wednesday for prayer meeting. She has graduated from the "kids club". She has more responsibility at this season in her life, then ever before, but she is also going to get rewarded more then ever before. Can you say "Summer Trip"? Oh how exciting. You know... I told her about it and she gave me a 1/2 grin. Oh man alive... I so wear my emotions on my sleeve... 1/2 of a grin??? WHATEVER... I wanted to jump up and down... I'm so uncool. LOL

Did anyone read the article by Mr. Pearl this month? The Cloistered Homeschool Syndrome. This is the time when she has to begin to decide if she has her parent's religion or if it is her own. I just want to take baby steps, baby steps... but I feel like we are stretching by leaps and bounds. I guess it depends on who you are asking. LOL

My Schedule

So -- this is it. I'd better start enjoying my last week of free time. LOL Except for Fridays I look pretty booked.
And you wondered why I love church so much. HA!

(Remember - if you click on it - it will enlarge to be readable).

I'm going to get on the computer to report my weight and food consumption to my friends, then turn the computer off. I have absolutely no time to waste through out the day. I'm already looking forward to December.

I was talking to Dan about this yesterday and he said, "Remember -- we have to cut wood after supper in the fall." So - that shading at the bottom -- it's not really my own free time, it's family time. I sure hope my family decides to relax and put their feet up every once in a while. LOL

I'm looking forward to school. Did I mention I love structure? When I follow a schedule I feel like I get so much done. I can't wait!

p.s. OK -- I've already updated this. As I was doing Tori's schedule I noticed I schedule her Apologia Science twice... but how she was going to do MFW and Apologia science at the same time, I'll never know. LOL So -- I've got a wee bit more free time. MFW Littles science is only on M,W. Whew... I feel better already.

Master Schedule

OK -- I love schedules. I like making them. I love looking at them. I feel so orderly when I complete one. I love going over the schedule with the kiddos...

Yet... then there is real life. LOL

Sometimes life gets in the way of my schedule. But my intentions are always the best.

May alive -- why is that so tiny? I'm pretty sure if you click on it -- it will enlarge. If you care to see what I'm doing at 11:45 a.m., that is.

We'll implement this schedule September 2nd.
Now -- on to making individual schedules and updating kiddos chore packs.
And ordering books.

CPI Forms

My Competent Private Instruction (CPI) forms are all signed, and now need to be mailed into the school districts.

Praise God! What a good feeling.

Necole is going to be my supervising teacher... so if you see a comment from Necole -- she's the boss. What she says goes. LOL Oh... I'mJustKidding!! I love Necole. She is a good friend. A good friend who will tell the truth in a loving way.

So -- the ball is rolling. I feel like I need to sit down and make up a schedule. Why? Oh -- I don't know... so I can look back on this day 3 months from now and shake my head at my wasting of my time. I NEED to be organized... that's why... a schedule makes me feel orderly. Aren't we supposed to do things decently and in order. If things are on the list, they usually get over looked.

I guess making a schedule is the next thing on my to do list.

Milo's 2008-2009 School Year Plans

Milo will be doing the following. If this looks vaguely familiar -- it's because so much of our school overlaps.

So -- Milo will be starting 1st grade in Sunday School.

He will finish up Creation to the Greeks with us and begin Rome to Reformation unit. This is designed to be taught at a 2nd grade level. So anything he gleans is beneficial, but not required. He will NOT be required to do the worksheets or hands on projects, although sometimes he likes to watch the science experiments and do the hands on projects. This part of his school - hands on, is child driven. I always have him sit and listen to the readings and join in with the verse memorizing.

This includes:

Bible/History
  • Rome, the life of Jesus, early church history, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation from a Christian perspective.
  • Bible readings and memory verses.
  • Hands-on projects: Make a Roman writing tablet and enjoy a Roman feast, construct a Roman arch, sample foods from the Middle Ages, play Medieval games and more.
  • Learn to play chess and construct a cardboard castle.
  • Map work, history notebook, and timeline.
  • Library book. Daily reading out of the book basket! This will not be REQUIRED of him, but he can read if he wants to.
Science
  • Human body - participate in simple experiments and demonstrations as well as make simple models of body systems.
  • Astronomy - explore the universe from a Christian perspective. Includes hands-on activities.
  • Weekly nature walk and nature journal.
Read Aloud
  • Selected books that are integrated with the study of history to inspire and develop godly character. We will use The Bronze Bow, Twice Freed, Dangerous Journey, and Door in the Wall.
Art and Music
  • Enjoy hands-on projects from history.
  • Art lessons include drawing as well as Roman, Early Church, and Middle Ages art from a godly perspective, using God and The History of Art .
  • Music appreciation lessons focus on Haydn, Beethoven, and Mozart.

Of course vocabulary lessons focus on Latin roots using English from the Roots Up.

Those things are all things we will be doing as a family. We set up our school like a one room school house. Combining as many things as we can. The rest of the list with be done alone, or one on one with Mom.

MFW suggests that a student begins Singapore math in 2nd grade, starting with book 1A. So - we will follow that suggest for Milo. MFW has a 1st grade program that you can purchase separately, and also teach separately one on one. I am choosing NOT to do that. Since the Math is included in the 1st grade manual, we won't be doing the MFW math for 1st grade. I WILL be getting The Complete Book of Math workbook that they suggest you get if you aren't going to do the 1st grade math. So -- he will be doing math every day from the workbook, as well as all day long as I think about it. Calendar work, days of the week, time - I recently purchased a how to tell time book for him from e-bay. (Thanks Lisa) I'll print off the Singapore placement test for the 1A text book to make sure he will be up to the standard when he will begin that program in 2nd grade. There are also all kinds of free web-sites for math that I will be using to print off worksheets, or have him play math games to keep from having any gaps in his math education.

He will be doing book A of the Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting series.

Our piano teacher likes to start pianos lessons in 2nd grade. He has one more year of reprieve from this "torture". LOL

He will continue using 100 EZ Lessons until it is complete. This books says the student will be on a 2nd grade reading level when complete. If he can read at a 2nd grade level at the end of 1st grade, I will be happy. Upon completing this book we will start to use the Pathway Readers together. This is one on one with Mom.

We also will be using the Bible Reader with simplified Bible stories that the student reads for himself. This is a MFW product. At the beginning on the year I read and he follows along. Then he eventually will read to me.

The spelling power book recommends we begin using this in 2nd grade. So he will not be doing spelling.

He will also work on his S.S. lesson paper and be memorizing his S.S. verse each week. I write this up on his white board list too each day.

He will not be open enrolled or dual enrolled.

Mansel's 2008-2009 School Year Plans

Mansel will be doing the following. If this looks vaguely familiar -- it's because so much of our school overlaps. My friend Cathy said this about MFW... it's like all of the students are on the same bus. The bus is taking a tour. My 1st grader, Milo, my 3rd grader, Mansel, and my 7th grader, Tori are all headed along the same route. They all hear the same information. Milo is the youngest, he will get the least amount out of, but we keep teaching to the next level, because Mansel will get even more out of it. But don't stop there because Tori will be challenged too and retain the most. But not to worry -- because in 4 years we do the same Bible/History cycle all over again, and they will be challenged even more in those years. The bonus? My non-schoolers who are supposed to be playing with rocks and sticks... they are learning too.

So -- Mansel will be starting 3rd grade in Sunday School.

He will finish up Creation to the Greeks with us and begin Rome to Reformation unit.

NOTE: I put all sorts of reading levels in this book basket. From picture books up to adult level reading. I LOVE fining Mansel reading the adult level books. I'm sure a lot of times he's just looking at the pictures, but he has gained an amazing wealth of information from this book basket time. This is one of my favorite features of My Father's World.

He will be starting Singapore Math this year. We were using Landmark Freedom Baptist Curriculum for math. It has served us well. But I want to stream line our curriculum as much as possible to line up with My Father's World. I want the ease in ordering and the ease of following the lesson plans as much as possible. So he will begin Singapore Math with textbook 1B. That's where the placement test put him. After he finishes that book he'll begin 2A.

He will be doing book C of the Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting series.

He will continue to do piano lessons on Monday, which includes 20 minutes of piano practice each day. That will be up from him normal 15 minutes.

He will continue on with the Primary Language Lessons, hopefully finishing that book this year.

Last but not least - he will continue to do spelling using the Spelling Power system that we started this spring. We do this together - one on one.

He will not be open enrolled or dual enrolled. I think we'll wait until they enter 7th grade before we start that. Knoxville has the students in middle school starting in 6th grade, but I think we'll still wait until 7th grade for each of scheduling for MOM! They begin more independent learning at this age, so they can be rewarded in this way. More independent learning required of them, so they get more independent recreation as a bonus.

He will also work on his S.S. lesson paper and be memorizing his S.S. verse each week. I write this up on his white board list too each day.

Tori's 2008-2009 School Year Plans

Tori will be doing the following.

Starting 7th grade in Sunday School. LOL We so don't follow "years" here. But for the outside world... she's in 7th grade.

She will finish up Creation to the Greeks with us and begin Rome to Reformation unit.

Science
  • Human body - participate in simple experiments and demonstrations as well as make simple models of body systems.
  • Astronomy - explore the universe from a Christian perspective. Includes hands-on activities.
  • Weekly nature walk and nature journal.
  • For 7th and 8th graders, enrich science topics with library books or add a grade-appropriate science course such as Apologia. So she will be doing Apologia Exploring Creation with General Science on her own.
She may be instrumental in these 2 classes, gathering supplies and making the class run more smoothly. I haven't discussed that with her yet. I would like her to start taking a more active role in helping to teach the youngers. I think this would really benefit her in the long run.

Of course vocabulary lessons focus on Latin roots using English from the Roots Up. I don't know about the kids, but I have really enjoyed using this to learn some Greek roots this year.

Those things are all things she will be doing WITH us. We set up our school like a one room school house. Combining as many things as we can. The rest of the list with be done alone, or one on one with Mom.

She will finish up Saxon 7/6 and then begin 8/7. I'm getting the D.I.V.E. CD for her so she can do more of this on her own.
She will do two units of Progeny Press using the books Holes, and Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Writing Strands #3 will be another language arts aspect we will be including in her school year.
She will be doing book G of the Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting series.
She will continue to do piano lessons on Monday, which includes 30 minutes of piano practice each day.
She will continue on with the Intermediate Language Lessons, hopefully finishing that book this year.
Last but not least - she will continue to do spelling using the Spelling Power system that we started this spring. We do this together - one on one.

That seems like a TON of stuff. What I love about My Father's World??? They have it all scheduled out for me. I've done some switching over this year -- so everything lines up with MFW and it's all planned out for me in daily lessons.

I take the Teacher's Manual and go to the white board and under each student's name I write down what I expect of them that day. If they can do the work and show me the work and it's satisfactory - then their free time begins. I include their chores on the white board too. Sometimes the day seems sort of long - but MFW is designed to be done in a 1/2 day. I try to start them EARLY so they can have some time to be KIDS!

One new thing this year -- we are opening enrolling her into the Knoxville School District. We will be dual enrolling her so she will be able to participate in athletics. Cross Country is our first option. If that goes well -- she gets her school work done as well as practice each day, then we'll decide on the next sport. That would be basket ball. Then in the spring softball and track are available. I LOVED watching her learn how to play softball and I think she would really be a benefit to their team, but we'll see. I don't think she was as excited about softball as I was. LOL

So -- that's Tori's year. I look forward to coming back to this post in June 2009 to see how much of it we accomplish in 9 months time.

New Year

We will begin our new school year after the holiday in September. I promise my kiddos they can have all of August off... so that puts our start date at September 2, 2008.

When we start the new school year -- I'll start a new blog. This Here Blog! This will be where I document all things schoolish!

I got this idea from another ladies blog... so don't go thinking I'm all smart, or something.

I must post here once a week for accountability reasons.

I would REALLY appreciate any feed back you have to offer.

We plan on sticking to the 3 months on, 1 month off routine. Having December, April and August totally off. I really need to try to refrain from scheduleing BIG things in the 3 months on. I'm going to be very jealous of my school time this year. I hate that we didn't finish CTG in the 9 months. Now I feel behind. But I will admit... this is the LEAST behind we've ever been.

I'm now going to write a post for each kids - outlining what their school year should look like. (Lord willing.
